My second game project I worked on in 2024, Gunstorm Rebels is a frantic rung and gun style action game, influenced by Gunstar Heroes primarily. I wanted to make a game with the mechanic of combining special weapons into different forms. Origionally I thought it should be simple enough to just combine different values of things together to make bullets larger, or more spread out, but after replaying Gunstar Heroes, I felt it was more fun to actually make the combinations more unique than just multiplying values together. My proceess for this was sort of rubbish tbh, but I got a framework in place which i built off of, and could expand more. Heck my origional goal was to add just two more weapon types, and maybe a way to combine 3 weapons into one, but that was going to take so much more time to implement, so I just went with gunstars standard set of 4 weapons.

It’s pretty tricky having to balance values in a game like this. It’s short and sweet so it doesn’t matter too much, but it still niggled in the back of my mind that some guns were just more powerful than others. Also some bullet behaviour is not as good as i wanted, but works in interesting ways in the game. I did all the art for this one by hand this time round, I’m still lacking in experience there, and figuring out how to make things look stylish, but I’m happy I did put in the effort so far, even if it did add like, 2-3 weeks to the project.
